The real-life story of The Mechanic is a funny one, at best. Set in New York City in the 1950s, it follows the life of mechanic Jack Shea, who works for a company called mechanic Eight Mile Plains, but soon finds himself in over his head. He goes from washing cars to building them, and in between, he tries to balance his relationship with his wife, his daughter, and his mechanic. There are moments when the story is dry and dull, and then there are moments of real drama and humor – especially during one particularly hilarious chase sequence. In the end, The Mechanic is no more than an interesting diversion, but in the beginning, it becomes clear that this is more than just that.

Though a rather simplistic account at first glance, The Mechanic is anything but that. The personal experiences it chronicles make it an engrossing, humorous read that just as easily makes you cheer as you read it.
