Why Do You Need a House Thermal Survey?

Our homes consume a lot of energy and the earth’s finite resources shouldn’t be wasted needlessly. A house thermal survey helps to address issues which lead to inefficient heating, high fuel bills and a negative impact on the environment.

Thermographic surveys are used to identify heat loss through air infiltration, cold bridging, ventilation leaks and poor insulation. A comprehensive survey can reveal areas that would be very difficult to identify visually or by using a mechanical inspection method. This non-invasive and cost effective technique can be very useful in new build houses where quality control might have been compromised in order to reduce construction costs.

Home Comfort and Savings: The Role of a House Thermal Survey

Many people have experienced a feeling that their home is ‘cold’ or draughty and want answers as to why. This could be a result of the property being poorly insulated or due to deterioration in door seals or window frames. Thermographic surveys can help pinpoint the cause of the problem and prioritize the areas of the building that need to be improved first.

A thermographic survey can be carried out as a standalone service or combined with a regular visual inspection. The weather conditions mustn’t be too windy or rainy as a quick cooling of the surface will produce an inaccurate thermal reading. The survey is usually undertaken on the inside of the building as this is less affected by atmospheric conditions. The images produced by the camera are displayed on a screen and interpreted by an ABBE-accredited thermographer who produces a detailed report.
